TITLE: Bilingual Dominant Language Tutor (DLT),  Grade 3, Support Staff Salary Schedule

REPORTS TO: Supervising Teacher/Site Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent; must have the equivalent of an Associate’s degree or be able to pass the Parapro assessment in reading, writing and math.

Experience: Prior tutoring experience is preferred; experience working with children is preferred

Skills: Ability to understand and respond to needs of children, parents and other public as necessary; must demonstrate courtesy, tact and common sense, maintaining a pleasant working relationship with parents and staff; maintain consistent regular attendance; ability to use computer technology (i.e., word processing, data entry, email, projectors, ipads or other “pads”, and smart boards)

Knowledge: Oral and written proficiency in English and applicable second language; A basic understanding of child development is necessary; fluent and accurate use of English language both written and oral; competency in mathematics to a high school level; ability to readily read and comprehend science, social studies and other school topics in order to tutor students; knowledge of confidentiality laws as they pertain to student information. 

Physical Requirements:

• Be able to sit, stand, and walk without fatigue or discomfort
• Be able to lift and carry 25 pounds
• Be able to pull or push 50 pounds

Other: May need to work outside in extremely cold temperatures (to about -50 degrees F) for student supervision purposes. Itinerant travel between school sites may be necessary

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

General Responsibilities: A Bilingual Dominant Language Tutor (DLT) assists students who speak a language other than English in learning to speak English by providing support in the student’s home language during the transition to English.

Responsibility to the program imposes the following obligations: 

• Being able to accept differences in people, values, standards, goals, ambitions, and having respect for individual integrity
• Maintaining consistent and regular attendance
• Being reliable and flexible
• Having sufficient sense of organizational procedures to be able to accept discipline while working happily within the established structure and policies of the school 
• Being willing to acquire skills needed to be of value to the school programs
• Discussing any specific problems with the supervising staff member or the principal
• Using discretion in commenting on school matters, including the performance of other school personnel

The responsibility to the school imposes the following obligations:

• Recognition that the professional staff will specify the tasks aides will perform, the authority aides will be given, and the information and materials DLTs will use •
• Acknowledging that criticism of school personnel and/or school practices is an ineffective and unsatisfactory method of improving public education
• Understanding that regulations and procedures of the school are to be followed at all times

Responsibility to self requires each DLT to:

• Maintain positive attitudes
• Accept the responsibility to help all students develop positive self-esteem
• Be responsible for his/her own actions
• Know his/her role and be able to express what that role is to the community in a positive manner
• Maintain personal cleanliness
• Wear appropriate clothing (avoiding extremes)
• Use appropriate language
• Give full cooperation to the total school staff

Essential Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. • Proficiently speak English and other required language in order to provide students with good role model of English and to be able to translate accurately information for the student’s learning
• Be able to accurately and efficiently interpret oral conversations between students, staff and parents
• Be able to accurately translate written documents between staff and parents
• Be effective in tutoring students who are learning English in the required subject areas

Examples of Duties:

• Provide vocabulary and concept development tutoring to students, as related to content curriculum, using the student’s first language and English with services provided within the classroom
• Communicate with the classroom teacher for specific instructions regarding activities to be carried out with the student
• Translate academic concepts and content materials; develop background and vocabulary necessary for content curriculum comprehension
• Utilize appropriate instructional techniques for second language learners
• Assist in assignments and testing situations by translating key words, directions, and format – without providing answers
• Translate program letters, transcripts, forms and notices, at the request of the school or bilingual office
• Project and nurture cultural pride and a healthy cross-cultural perspective
• Providing student supervision during non-instructional times (i.e.- lunch, recess, bus transitions, assemblies)
• Other duties as assigned from time to time

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Based on negotiated agreement between the Delta/Greely School District Board of Education and the Delta/Greely Education Support Staff Association

SUPERVISION: The Bilingual Dominant Language Tutor is supervised by the Site Principal who is responsible for evaluating the employee at least annually.
