Job Title: English Language Arts Teacher
Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher to join our educational team. The ideal candidate will foster a positive, inclusive, and rigorous learning environment that empowers students to achieve their full potential. You will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging instruction, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with families and colleagues to support the holistic development of our students.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Education or an applicable major.
· Must hold or be eligible for a current Type T Alaska Teaching Certificate.
· Demonstrated ability to effectively live and work in a cross-cultural setting is highly desirable.
Essential Functions
As an ELA Teacher, your core responsibilities include:
· Develop and implement detailed, standards-aligned lesson plans; source and create high-quality instructional materials.
· Actively promote student success and hold primary responsibility for learning outcomes within the classroom.
· Maintain a physical and emotional classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning, safety, and engagement, in accordance with state laws and health/safety standards.
· Administer and analyze assessments to evaluate student progress and the educational program; maintain accurate, up-to-date records regarding achievement and attendance.
· Work a full schedule in compliance with state, federal, and negotiated policies; manage classroom discipline effectively; and assist in the development of yearly departmental goals.
· Identify and refer students who require additional physical, mental, social, or educational support services outside the regular classroom setting.
· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the school community.

Bering Strait School District is located in western Alaska. Working and living in our region is far more similar to an overseas teaching position than it is living and working in the mainstream schools of the Lower 48 states. Cultural traditions are still strong, and we have 15 villages that still practice subsistence hunting and fishing as a lifestyle in the community. Nearly all of our students are Yup'ik, Siberian Yup'ik, or Iñupiaq. Teachers looking for a non-traditional, cross-cultural setting with a progressive district are ideal candidates.
