By providing high-quality, student-centered instruction, the instructor helps learners build essential academic skills, prepare for the GED Test, and explore career pathways. Job Summary:
The Adult Education (AE) Instructor delivers individualized and small-group instruction in math, reading, writing, science, social studies, English language learning, test-taking strategies, GED Test preparation, computer literacy, and college and career readiness. The instructor tailors lessons to student needs, ensuring a structured yet flexible approach to adult learning.
Reports to: AAE Program Coordinator
Minimum Qualifications:
Teaching degree or B.A. in a related field, preferred.
Alaska Teaching Certificate, preferred.
Ability to work with adult learners from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
Experience assessing student literacy levels and developing individual study plans.
Familiarity with GED Testing and other high school equivalency options.
Knowledge of career readiness skills and career planning resources.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional strategies tailored to diverse learners.
Strong understanding of core academic subjects, including math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, as well as English language acquisition and test-taking strategies.
Ability to assess student needs and adjust instruction accordingly.
Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
Proficiency in integrating technology and computer skills into instruction.
Ability to communicate effectively with adult learners from varied social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
Commitment to maintaining a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Strong organizational skills, including maintaining student records and providing clear instructional notes for continuity of learning.
Ability to respect and maintain student confidentiality.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work will be considered.
Typical Duties:
Instruct individuals and groups in adult education subjects.
Develop individualized learning goals and study plans.
Conduct student orientation, assessments, and onboarding.
Maintain a safe, supportive, student-focused learning environment.
Track student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
Recruit, train, and support volunteer tutors.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop training programs.
Promote programs through partner communication and social media.
Maintain student records and provide reports as required.
Provide appropriate referrals to community services.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical/Mental Demands:
The physical demands of this position require frequent sitting, standing, walking, speaking and hearing. The employee is regularly required to use a computer screen (or equivalent) and keyboard. The employee is regularly required to reach, feel and lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel or crouch. Work Schedule:
Part-time and full-time options are available.
Benefits: SERRC offers an excellent benefits package including State of Alaska retirement plans TRS/PERS), health benefits, annual/personal leave and sick leave depending on the length of the employment contract. Employees who work 173 days or more during the contract year are eligible for full-time benefits. Employees who work between 115-172 days are eligible for pro-rated health benefits. Hourly employees who are scheduled to work 15 hours per week or less are not eligible for benefits.
