Chatham School District is seeking an innovative, energetic, and hands-on Grades 6-12 Career & Technical Education (CTE) / STEAM Teacher to inspire students through project-based learning, technical skill development, and career exploration. This position provides students with authentic learning experiences that prepare them for college, careers, and life by integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) with Career and Technical Education.
The successful candidate will develop engaging programs centered around small engine repair, basic automotive maintenance, sawmill operations using the district's Wood-Mizer portable sawmill, hydroponic gardening and sustainable agriculture, and middle and high school STEAM education. The teacher will create meaningful, real-world learning experiences that develop problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, and workforce readiness while connecting classroom learning to the unique opportunities and needs of Southeast Alaska.
A classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the site administrator with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment, establishes and adapts learning objectives aligned with Alaska State Standards, Alaska CTE Standards, and Chatham School District curriculum, provides instruction and supervision, and evaluates student performance and progress.
Minimum Educational Level
Bachelor's Degree Or M-certification
Valid Alaska Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain Alaska certification
Career & Technical Education endorsement or related industry experience preferred
Experience in one or more technical trades, agriculture, engineering, or industrial technology preferred
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Develop and teach engaging Grades 6-12 CTE and STEAM courses using project-based and hands-on instructional practices.
Provide instruction in:
Small engine maintenance and repair
Basic automotive maintenance and repair
Woodworking and lumber production utilizing the district's Wood-Mizer portable sawmill
Hydroponic gardening, greenhouse management, and sustainable agriculture
Middle School and High School STEAM education, including engineering design, robotics, fabrication, and applied technology
Teach workplace readiness skills including communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, financial literacy, and professionalism.
Supervise students in shop, greenhouse, laboratory, and outdoor learning environments while maintaining high safety standards.
Maintain and safely operate tools, equipment, machinery, vehicles, greenhouse systems, and instructional materials.
Develop partnerships with local businesses, tribal organizations, industry professionals, and community members to provide authentic learning experiences, internships, mentorships, and career exploration opportunities.
Incorporate local culture, environmental stewardship, and community resources into instruction whenever appropriate.
Integrate academic concepts in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology into technical education courses.
Assess student learning regularly and use assessment data to improve instruction.
Maintain accurate student records, including attendance and grading.
Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and classroom activities.
Participate in school improvement initiatives, professional learning, and district committees.
Support Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), student leadership activities, and other extracurricular opportunities when appropriate.
Support the mission, vision, and core values of Chatham School District.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of Career and Technical Education instructional practices and project-based learning.
Experience with or willingness to learn small engine repair, automotive maintenance, woodworking, sawmill operations, hydroponic agriculture, and greenhouse systems.
Knowledge of engineering design processes and STEAM instructional strategies.
Ability to safely supervise students using hand tools, power tools, machinery, and equipment.
Knowledge of OSHA and shop safety procedures.
Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
Ability to teach multiple grade levels in a rural K-12 school setting.
Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.
Commitment to continuous professional growth and lifelong learning.
Computer proficiency and ability to integrate instructional technology into classroom learning.
Ability and willingness to incorporate Alaska Native culture, local knowledge, and place-based education into instruction.

In Southeast Alaska, The Chatham School District serves an area of approximately 43,000 square miles stretching from Angoon, on Admiralty Island in the South, to Klukwan, beyond Haines, in the North.
The district is composed of four schools in separate communities. Angoon lies on Admiralty Island. Tenakee Springs is on Chichagof Island. Gustavus lies on the mainland near the entrance to Glacier Bay. The village of Klukwan lies 22 miles North of Haines. The communities are accessible by state ferry and/or plane. The schools vary in enrollment from a dozen in Tenakee to about 75 in Angoon.
The overall operation of the Chatham District is under the leadership of an elected board. The board members can be contacted by mail through the district office at Post Office Box 109, Angoon, Alaska 99820.
The board believes that input from the site level can improve school performance. There is an Advisory School Board representing each site. Chatham’s District-wide Superintendent, David Langford, in conjunction with board members and all school staff, implements school policies.
