JOB OPENING
Intervention Specialist (Instructional Tutor)
Summary of the Job: Once hired, the District will provide round trip airfare from the closest major airport to Anchorage, where tutors will be met by district representatives for an induction and assistance with shopping and shipping. From Anchorage, the District will fly the tutors to their assigned school site for the majority of the spring semester. District housing will be provided. Tutors will be placed on the Classified Salary Scale under Aide IV: E5, $26.85 per hour.
Once at their school site, tutors will meet with site administration and staff to review current interventions, summative and interim assessment data, and any other available information related to individual student needs, and from the information formulate a work schedule to address the needs of each student. Tutors work from 8:00am-4:00pm with a half-hour unpaid lunch, and one 30 minute prep period. 30 minutes before or after school will be used for additional tutoring time, based on site scheduling and needs. This equates to a 37.5 hour work-week.
During their period of employment, tutors will participate in professional development provided by LPSD – essentially an extension of a teaching practicum in an inservice setting. During their time with the District, tutors will be supervised by the school principal or another district administrator with a Type B certificate. The administrator will use the same instrument completed by the tutor as a self-assessment and performance evaluation. The observation and evaluation process will result in formal, written feedback that the tutor can use as a reference when applying for work. It will also help LPSD select and offer permanent employment to the best-fit candidate(s).

The Lake and Peninsula School District is located on the Alaska Peninsula and comprises an area, in square miles, roughly the size of the state of West Virginia. Extending 400 miles from Lake Clark in the north to Perryville in the south, it contains three National Parks; two National Wildlife Refuges; and numerous designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. The central office of the District is located in King Salmon, approximately halfway between Port Alsworth, the northern most school, and Perryville, the southernmost. None of the school sites can be reached by roadway; all transportation is by means of boat or small planes.
The Lake and Peninsula Borough provides large amounts of high quality habitat that support a phenomenal amount of flora and fauna. The Bristol Bay region is recognized as a world leader in salmon productivity. Commercial fishing, sport fishing and hunting, bear viewing, recreation and tourism, and subsistence are important economic activities that rely on the bounty of the Borough's landscape. Salmon spawning streams attract some of the largest concentrations of brown bear in Alaska. Approximately 10,000 brown bears populate the region, making them more numerous than people. Abundant moose and caribou inhabit the region. Other mammals include wolves, wolverines, river otters, red fox, and beaver. Sea Otters, sea lions, harbor seals and migratory whales inhabit the shoreline and offshore waters. Coastal estuaries are home to waterfowl while nesting eagles, peregrine falcons, and thousands of seabirds inhabit the sea cliffs.
The mission of the Lake and Peninsula School District is to nourish student growth by investing in partnerships & implementing culturally responsive, place-based education. We accomplish this through growing self-directed, life-long learners who are grounded in their culture & contribute to their communities.
