TITLE: Speech & Language Pathologist
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Speech/Language Pathologist certificate, Valid Alaska Type ‘A’ or ‘C’ Teaching Certificate.
2. Master's Degree in speech language pathology.
3. Two years experience in speech pathology, preferred.
4. Willingness to work with speech pathology intern.
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
JOB GOAL: To help reduce or eliminate speech, language, and hearing impediments that interferes with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational
program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
2. Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual need of speech and hearing handicapped children.
3. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
4. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
5. Provides screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals and specified levels.
6. Assists in proper referrals of individualized programs of therapy to meet individual student's needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps.
7. Collaborates with classroom teacher and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
8. Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
9. Provides inservice education and serves a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
10. Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
11. Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
12. Complies care history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early development history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
13. Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
14. Assist in the preparation of the annual budget for speech therapy services.
15. Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Beginning January 5, 2026
SALARY: Depending on experience/negotiated salary schedule
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy.

The Northwest Arctic Borough covers 38,000 square miles in one of the world's most beautiful remote areas. Much of the region lies north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding terrain is Arctic tundra, dotted with hundreds of lakes and rivers. Within the region are several protected land areas including Noatak National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Preserve, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife is abundant, with caribou, moose, bear, salmon and sheefish constituting a significant portion of the local diet.
