Job Description
Job Title: Middle/High School Counselor, 6-12
Reports To: Building Principal
Job Goal: To provide counseling services to enhance the academic, social and emotional welfare of students as well as provide post-high school work force and/or collegiate entrance direction to aspiring students.
Qualifications:
Degree in counseling or equivalent field required.
Must possess an Alaskan Type C license.
Background in education preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Scheduling
Consult with the school principal on the development of the master schedule
Build student schedules based on the approved master schedule
Assist students in making changes to their schedule during the add/drop period in the first week of each semester
Academic Counseling
Meet with every senior by the end of October to establish a post-secondary transition plan
Provide direct support to seniors with college/university, vocational training program, or workforce applications (including admissions processes and FAFSA requirements)
Develop and implement a plan to connect seniors with local, regional, and national scholarship opportunities
Regularly review academic records and meet with students who are in danger of failing to arrange additional support
Communicate with parents about students’ academic progress, needs, and accomplishments
Arrange guest speakers on topics related to the academic program when opportunities become available
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of academic counseling activities
Student Records
Ensure accuracy of PowerSchool records and collaborate with the registrar to make corrections as needed
BBRCTE
Serve as the district representative to the Bristol Bay Region Career and Technical Education consortium
Develop and implement a plan to fill all seats offered to DMHS in BBRCTE sessions
Social/Emotional Instruction
Develop a monthly classroom visitation schedule to provide students with education on topics such as relationships, bullying prevention, sexual harassment, and other social/emotional concerns
Student Testing
In collaboration with teachers, develop and implement a plan to administer testing requirements to students at DMHS, including but not limited to fall, winter, and spring MAP tests and PEAKS
System-Level Supports
Participate in the school leadership team and represent the academic counseling perspective in decision-making processes
Provide occasional training to staff on topics related to the academic program, testing, or social/emotional learning
Join district-level committees as assigned (ex. the school calendar committee)
Other duties as assigned by the school principal
