JOB TITLE: District-Wide K–12 Counselor / Social Worker
STATUS: Certified
REPORTS TO: Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent / Site Principals
HOURS: 7.5 hours per day
DAYS: 182 Days
LOCATION: District-Wide (Monthly site rotation)

JOB PURPOSE

The District-Wide K–12 Counselor / Social Worker provides comprehensive social-emotional, behavioral, and counseling support to students across all district schools. This position is responsible for traveling to district sites and spending approximately one week per month at each site to deliver direct counseling services, classroom instruction, and relationship-based support.

The counselor/social worker works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and administrators to strengthen student resilience, self-responsibility, personal safety, and emotional well-being while supporting positive school climate and student success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Counselor / Social Worker is directly responsible to district administration and works in close collaboration with site principals and staff.

District-Wide Service Model

• Travel to each district school site and spend approximately one full week per month at each location.
• Maintain consistent presence to build trusting relationships with students and staff.
• Coordinate schedules with site leadership to ensure equitable access to services.

Student Counseling and Support

• Provide individual and small-group counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or family challenges.
• Support students with concerns including anxiety, grief, attendance, peer conflict, bullying, harassment, trauma, and adjustment issues.
• Assist students in developing coping strategies, resilience, and self-advocacy skills.
• Refer students and families to appropriate community or regional resources when needed.

Classroom Instruction and Prevention

Work collaboratively with teachers to deliver developmentally appropriate lessons on:

• Resilience and self-responsibility
• Personal safety and healthy boundaries
• Internet safety and digital citizenship
• Harassment and bullying prevention
• Social-emotional learning and positive decision-making

Provide age-appropriate discussions with younger students regarding bullying, harassment, and personal safety.

College, Career, and Post-High School Support

• Assist with planning and supporting district job fairs, college fairs, and career exploration events.
• Support students with post-high school planning, including college, training, military, and workforce pathways.
• Assist students and families with post-high school applications, including college, vocational, and scholarship applications.
• Provide guidance and support for financial aid opportunities, including FAFSA assistance and scholarship awareness.
• Collaborate with staff to ensure students understand graduation requirements and post-secondary options.

School Climate and Collaboration

• Work with staff and administration to promote a positive, safe, and inclusive school climate.
• Participate in student support teams, behavior intervention planning, and problem-solving meetings.
• Serve as an advocate for students when educational decisions impact their well-being.
• Provide consultation to teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators regarding student needs.

Family and Community Engagement

• Build positive relationships with families and caregivers.
• Assist families in navigating school-related concerns.
• Support communication between home and school.

Program Development and Professional Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and evaluating district counseling and social-emotional programs.
• Collect data on student needs and program effectiveness.
• Maintain accurate student documentation in accordance with confidentiality requirements.
• Pursue ongoing professional growth.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by district administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Alaska Certification in School Counseling, Social Work, or related field required.
• Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or closely related field preferred.
• Experience working with children and adolescents in educational or clinical settings preferred.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning preferred.
• Ability to travel regularly between district sites.
