The Aleutians East Borough School District (AEBSD) is seeking a highly effective instructional leader to serve as Principal of King Cove School, a K–12 school serving approximately 60 students in one of the Eastern Aleutians’ most dynamic coastal communities.
King Cove is a vibrant, welcoming community known for exceptional fishing, abundant wildlife viewing, and outstanding opportunities for outdoor exploration. King Cove School is housed in a modern, well-maintained facility and benefits from a stable, experienced teaching staff with strong longevity and a deeply supportive local community.
The school’s low teacher-to-student ratio allows for strong relationships, individualized instruction, and targeted academic and social-emotional support. This structure creates an ideal environment for a principal who values high-quality instruction, collaborative leadership, and continuous improvement. King Cove School serves as a central hub of community life and student activities, with families and community partners actively engaged in supporting student success.
AEBSD offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including housing assistance, flight allowances, and a moving stipend. Professional growth is actively supported, with opportunities to expand instructional leadership, administrative practice, and regional expertise. Educators who value meaningful relationships, professional autonomy, and place-based learning will find an exceptional quality of life in King Cove.
The King Cove School Principal reports to and is evaluated by the District Superintendent and serves as the instructional leader and chief administrator of the school. The principal is responsible for implementing district and Alaska Board of Education policies and ensuring that all students are educated in a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous learning environment that meets or exceeds state standards.
The principal’s primary focus is instructional leadership—supporting high-quality teaching and learning through curriculum implementation, data-informed decision-making, coaching and supervision of staff, and alignment of instruction across grade levels. In a small-school setting, the principal works closely with teachers to strengthen instructional practice, support differentiation, and ensure equitable access to learning opportunities for all students.
In addition to instructional leadership, the principal is responsible for:
Leading school improvement planning and program evaluation
Supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff
Supporting student activities and extracurricular programs
Managing school budgets and resources
Overseeing emergency procedures, school safety, and compliance
Coordinating scheduling, staffing, and use of instructional resources
Overseeing facilities operations in coordination with district staff
Building strong partnerships with families and the King Cove community
Achieving academic excellence in King Cove requires a principal who is visible, collaborative, and deeply committed to student learning, staff development, and community engagement.
