TITLE: High School Teacher - Social Studies
STATUS: Certificated
REPORTS TO: Site Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification: Valid Alaska teaching license.
Experience: Must have experience working with children at the secondary age level
Skills:
Language Skills: Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as curriculum guides, test results, statutes and policies. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to individuals and groups.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to apply ratio, percent, probability and estimation concepts. Possess an understanding of, and the ability to interpret for others, statistical
information.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to potentially technical situations. Ability to establish priority ordering of tasks necessary to complete a project and convey these understandings and priorities to others. Ability to employ logical sequencing, trouble-shooting, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, to stand, to walk, to go up and down stairs, to operate foot and hand controls, to use a telephone and to write. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational materials and objects, and providing oral information.
Other Skills and Abilities: Must have a working knowledge of computers and their capabilities. May need to work outside in extremely cold temperatures (to about -50 degrees F) for student supervision purposes

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Responsibilities: The secondary teacher assumes responsibility for teaching students assigned to them the standards and curriculum appropriate to the grade level and to the unique developmental level of each student. The elementary teacher assesses student needs; plans for, guides, and evaluates student learning and communicates student progress to pupils and parents.
Responsibility to the District/School Site imposes the following obligations:
• Maintaining consistent and regular attendance
• Being reliable and flexible
• Having sufficient sense of organizational procedures to be able to accept discipline while working happily within the established structure and policies of the school
• Being willing to acquire skills needed
• Discussing any specific problems with the supervising staff member or the principal. Using discretion in commenting on school matters, including the performance of individual paraprofessionals or other school personnel
• Acknowledging that criticism of school personnel and/or school practices is an ineffective and unsatisfactory method of improving public education
• Understanding regulations and procedures of the school are to be followed at all times

Examples of Duties:
• Planning and conducting activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students of different ages and abilities with opportunities to observe, question, investigate and learn
• Writing lesson plans
• Evaluating work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupil’s progress and development including legally required records such as grades and attendance
• Select and use a range of resources and equipment including technology to instruct students
• Prepare students for the all required assessments
• Prepare and maintain all records and reports related to attendance, grades, progress and activities; submit all documents on time
• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible
• Organizes time, space, materials and equipment for effective instruction
• Assist in updating and selecting curriculum for District wide use
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Subject to the Master Contract between the Delta/Greely School District and the Delta/Greely Education Association. One hundred and eighty-eight days
SUPERVISION: The Elementary Teacher is supervised by the Site Principal and will be evaluated according the District Certificated Staff Evaluation procedures
