Job Title: Accounting Technician
Salary: Begins at 28.85 hr, DOE & Education
Days: 260 days (year round employee)
Reports To: Business Manager
Job Summary
Under general direction of the Business Manager, the Accounting Technician performs specialized accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, and administrative support for the Business and Human Resources Departments. The position also serves as the Fitness Center Clerk, maintaining membership records and payments. This role ensures that all financial transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
Prepare and process invoices, purchase orders, and payment requests in accordance with the Alaska State Uniform Chart of Accounts.
Manage accounts payable functions, ensuring accurate and timely payment of invoices.
Manage accounts receivable functions, including tracking incoming payments and preparing bank deposits.
Coordinate and book approved staff travel arrangements including transportation, lodging, and other necessary reservations.
Maintain accurate documentation for staff travel authorizations, expense reimbursements, and travel reconciliations.
Prepare, balance, and process payroll batches; calculate wages, overtime, and deductions within legal compliance.
Maintain all payroll records, deductions, and leave balances.
Prepare and file semi monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for retirement, Department of Revenue, employment security, and social security.
Reconcile payroll liability accounts and prepare weekly bank deposits.
Maintain organized records for tax documents, personnel pay histories, and benefit programs.
Provide Business Manager with reporting during yearly audit.
Process and record employee purchases and ensure accurate budget coding.
Learn and apply Black Mountain Accounting Software to perform accounting and reporting duties.
Track Wolverine Fitness Center memberships, payments, and related financial transactions as Fitness Center Clerk.
Provide courteous assistance to employees and retirees with payroll or financial inquiries.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Standard office equipment, including computer, printer, copier, fax machine, phone system, and 10-key calculator. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Black Mountain Accounting Software are preferred.
Financial Responsibilities
Receive all district activity funds and deposit to appropriate accounts weekly.
Oversee fundraising cash handling including logging, issuing, and reconciling cash boxes and credit card transactions.
Ensure all incoming and outgoing funds are processed in compliance with district and audit procedures.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, required.
One-year certificate or equivalent coursework in accounting, bookkeeping, or related field, preferred.
Associate’s degree in Applied Accounting, preferred.
Experience:
Three years of relevant experience in accounting, payroll, or financial administration, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Professional, courteous, and confidential.
Accurate in mathematical and financial recordkeeping.
Proficient with spreadsheets, accounting systems, and data entry.
Strong organizational and time management abilities.
Knowledge of district, state, and federal accounting procedures and regulations.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
