Primary Function:
Manages the total instructional program for eligible special education students placed in this classroom.
Provides screening, assessment, program development, instruction, and monitoring of classroom instruction for eligible special education students as required by state and federal regulations.
Provides assessment, program development, and instruction to eligible special education in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics, social-emotional growth, prevocational/community skills, and communication following District guidelines.
Responsible to: District Special Education Director, and site Administrator.
Immediate Subordinates: None
Assigned Responsibilities:
Attends team meetings as Case Manager of the service provider as designated by the IEP team.
Provides assessments for student eligibility and instructional placement for special education programs and corrective basic skills programs following District guidelines.
Develops Individual Education Programs (IEP) and annual reviews in compliance with Public Law 94-142 and District guidelines.
Writes or designates instructional objectives for each student categorized in special education.
Develops group or individual behavior management programs as needed.
Conducts systematic probes and reviews of skills mastered by assigned students.
Supervises volunteers and, if requested, an instructional assistant.
Consults with the IEP team, other special education program professionals and classroom teachers regarding student progress and grades.
Participates in the process for re-integration to regular classroom placement when necessary.
4.10 Provides instructional courses in social-emotional growth.
Minimum Qualifications:
Alaska teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement.Demonstrated Ability to:
Use interpersonal skills to consult with parents, aides, volunteers, administrators, classroom teachers and other IEP team professionals relative to the individual instructional needs of special education students.
Use appropriate individual programming and behavior management methods with primary and secondary school-aged, special education students.
Administer intelligence, academic and other diagnostic tests following District guidelines.
Provide instruction in the skills in reading, writing, mathematics, pre vocation, communication and social-emotional growth.
Train, place, and monitor students in a phase-in program to practice skills in the regular classroom setting.

In Southeast Alaska, The Chatham School District serves an area of approximately 43,000 square miles stretching from Angoon, on Admiralty Island in the South, to Klukwan, beyond Haines, in the North.
The district is composed of four schools in separate communities. Angoon lies on Admiralty Island. Tenakee Springs is on Chichagof Island. Gustavus lies on the mainland near the entrance to Glacier Bay. The village of Klukwan lies 22 miles North of Haines. The communities are accessible by state ferry and/or plane. The schools vary in enrollment from a dozen in Tenakee to about 75 in Angoon.
The overall operation of the Chatham District is under the leadership of an elected board. The board members can be contacted by mail through the district office at Post Office Box 109, Angoon, Alaska 99820.
The board believes that input from the site level can improve school performance. There is an Advisory School Board representing each site. Chatham’s District-wide Superintendent, David Langford, in conjunction with board members and all school staff, implements school policies.
