QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school graduate, with post-secondary or formal apprenticeship training. 2. Alaska certificate of Fitness for Electrician or ability to acquire certificate within one (1) year of hiring. 3. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities. 4. Valid Alaska driver’s license. 5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Director of Property Services
JOB GOAL: To help maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.
ERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 1. Assumes primary responsibility for the safe condition of the electrical systems in the facilities owned or operated by the District. 2. This includes lighting fixtures, wiring, electrical apparatus, and the electrical parts of heating, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment. 3. Determines which repair jobs may be performed by electricians, custodians, and maintenance workers on the staff and which must be performed by outside contracts and advises the Director of Property Services accordingly. 4. Supervises all electrical repair work performed by District personnel. 5. Supervises and executes preventative maintenance work orders on electrical equipment. 6. Instructs custodians and maintenance workers on the correct procedures in handling electrical equipment, and in the safe use of tools in electrical repair work. 7. Works with the Director of Property Services in estimating cost of electrical repair projects in terms of labor and materials. 8. Also sketches out and does material takeoffs on small electrical remodeling projects. 9. Supervises the installation and operation of all lighting and electrical sound equipment in auditorium and gymnasium for all special theatrical, athletic, and other performance events. 10. Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains the inventory of District-owned electrical equipment, tools, and supplies. 11. Works with the fire alarm systems contractor in the inspection and repair of District fire detection and alarm systems on an as-needed basis. 12. Submits preventative maintenance recommendations for electrical equipment in the District. 13. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Property Services.
The Northwest Arctic Borough covers 38,000 square miles in one of the world's most beautiful remote areas. Much of the region lies north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding terrain is Arctic tundra, dotted with hundreds of lakes and rivers. Within the region are several protected land areas including Noatak National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Preserve, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife is abundant, with caribou, moose, bear, salmon and sheefish constituting a significant portion of the local diet.
