TITLE: Construction Trades Instructor Location: Alaska Technical Center, Kotzebue, AK This position can be certified or classified based on applicant qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS: • Minimum 5 years of journey-level carpentry or construction trade experience, preferably with union (carpenter) certification. • NCCER Certified Instructor or ability to obtain NCCER Instructor Certification within 90 days of hire. • Experience teaching or mentoring in adult vocational, apprenticeship, or career & technical education (CTE) programs. • Proficient with OSHA standards, construction math, blueprint reading, power and hand tools, and framing techniques. • Demonstrated ability to develop lesson plans aligned to NCCER Core and Carpentry Levels 1-4. • Effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with adult learners. • Ability to work safely in Arctic conditions; prior experience preferred. • Type M Alaska Teacher Certification (if seeking certified placement). • Valid Alaska Driver’s License and ability
REPORTS TO: Director of Alaska Technical Center
JOB GOAL: To deliver high-quality, hands-on instruction in construction trades aligned with NCCER and carpenter union standards. The instructor will prepare adult learners for industryrecognized certifications, develop their skills for local workforce needs, and ensure safe and effective training in construction techniques, including Arctic-specific methods.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Deliver classroom and shop instruction aligned with NCCER standards and union best practices. • Teach safety, tool use, blueprint reading, and project-based construction skills. • Administer written and performance-based evaluations for NCCER credentialing. • Supervise and manage shop/lab activities, maintaining safe and organized workspaces. • Ensure strict compliance with OSHA, NCCER, and District safety protocols. • Track and record student attendance, grades, and NCCER certification progress. • Maintain and manage tools, equipment, and instructional materials. • Collaborate with local unions, contractors, and employers to enhance job placement opportunities. • Participate in program evaluation, planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Alaska Technical Center.
LENGTH OF POSITION: 200 days per school year SALARY: Depends on experience / negotiated salary schedule
The Northwest Arctic Borough covers 38,000 square miles in one of the world's most beautiful remote areas. Much of the region lies north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding terrain is Arctic tundra, dotted with hundreds of lakes and rivers. Within the region are several protected land areas including Noatak National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Preserve, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife is abundant, with caribou, moose, bear, salmon and sheefish constituting a significant portion of the local diet.
