JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: BOILERMAN/PLUMBER
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE
JOB PURPOSE: To effectively perform skilled manual work and to maintain school district boiler heating and
plumbing systems in a condition of operating excellence.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
1. Assume Responsibility for the maintenance and operations of the boiler heating systems of the school district.
2. Perform all maintenance and replacement work on the boiler heating and plumbing systems as necessary.
3. Is available for emergency calls relative to heating and plumbing problems in the school district.
4. Operate light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment.
5. Make estimates of material and repair parts requirements.
6. Keep records of out time and material required to complete assignments.
7. Establish logs and maintain records on maintenance checks and work completed.
8. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work.
9. Compile requisitions to maintain needed boiler equipment inventory.
10. Accompany state and insurance boiler inspectors on annual and special inspections to answer questions and
explain procedures.
11. Assist other school district Maintenance technicians as directed by the Director of Maintenance or his
designee.
12. Is able to engage in all jobs as may be necessary.
13. Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods. If necessary, work under undesirable weather conditions.
14. Perform interior and exterior building maintenance in addition to the boiler, hvac needs, plumbing, DDC, basic
carpentry and electrical.
15. Maintenance Boilerman duties include but are not limited to the above mentioned duties and other work may
be assigned as required.
Requirements:
1. High School Diploma with minimum of two years apprenticeship training in a job-related area.
2. At least two years’ experience at a journeyman’s level in a heating & plumbing related trades.
3. Must obtain a State of Alaska Boiler Operators License within 18 Months of Employment.
4. Must possess a strong mechanical background with a thorough knowledge of boilers and related equipment.
5. Must have the ability to follow oral and written directions, ask questions, elicit required information, and
comprehend written materials, policies, rules and instructions.
6. Demonstrated ability to think clearly and quickly in emergency and stressful situations.
7. State of Alaska driver’s license with no restrictions.
8. Must possess valid First Aid card.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak
effectively before parents, staff and students.
Mathematical Skill: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar
graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written,
oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Problem Solving: Can identify and resolves problems in a timely manner. Works well in group problem solving
situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
Interpersonal Skills: Focuses on solving conflict and not blaming. Maintains confidentiality. Listens to others

Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to operate computers and related software. Ability to perform
duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk,
hear, walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 80
lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material,
and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several
people and interact with the public and other staff. Requires outside duty and exposure to outside weather
conditions.
