FUNDING STATUS
This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon continued grant funding, program need, and applicable approvals.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Health Career Coach is the primary liaison among participating students, families, secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, healthcare employers and workforce development partners. The position provides sustained academic and career navigation from high school through healthcare training, credentials and employment, with particular attention to barriers facing students from rural Alaska communities. The position is responsible for maintaining all aspects of the RHTP grant including budgeting, data collection, and grant reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, workforce development, healthcare, human services or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Experience in student advising, career coaching, education, workforce development or healthcare pathways preferred. Experience with rural Alaska, Alaska Native or first-generation students strongly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: Strong communication, relationship building, organization, documentation and problem solving skills; knowledge of postsecondary pathways, student privacy and culturally responsive practice.
Other Requirements: Ability to travel as required; valid driver’s license and district background check and employment requirements. Relevant professional credentials preferred.
DUTIES & EXPECTATIONS
1. Recruit and engage students from YKSD schools, Raven Homeschool and participating partner districts in healthcare career pathways.
2. Help each student develop and update an individualized education and career plan, including training, credential and employment goals.
3. Advise students on healthcare occupations, prerequisites, admissions, registration, dual credit, financial aid and postsecondary transitions.
4. Coordinate enrollment and participation in approved healthcare education, career exploration and training, including nurse aide pathways where available.
5. Connect students with tutoring, academic support, study plans, application help, transportation and housing resources as needed.
6. Monitor attendance, engagement, academic progress, completion and credential milestones; follow up promptly when students face barriers.
7. Coordinate with schools, colleges, universities, healthcare employers and workforce agencies to strengthen pathway transitions and student support.
8. Arrange career exploration, mentorship, campus visits, job shadowing, clinical exposure and work-based learning with approved partners.
9. Support student preparation for healthcare credentials, further training, apprenticeships, clinical placements and employment.
10. Communicate regularly with students and families using culturally responsive practices and coordinate with the Student Facilitator during Fairbanks activities.
11. Maintain accurate and confidential student records and collect grant performance information in accordance with district policy and applicable privacy requirements.
12. Participate in partner meetings, outreach, scheduling, travel planning, evaluation and improvement of the RHTP/PATH initiative.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED
Standard office equipment, computers, video conferencing and student information systems; program and residence hall equipment as assigned.
INDEPENDENT DECISIONS
Makes routine decisions within School Board policy, district procedures, grant requirements, student safety protocols and assigned program responsibilities. Refers significant safety, health and disciplinary matters to the appropriate administrator or emergency service.
PRIMARY WORKING CONTACTS
Students, families, YKSD school staff, CTE and PATH staff, postsecondary partners, healthcare providers, workforce partners and community organizations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives oral and written direction from the assigned supervisor. Does not routinely supervise employees; provides student supervision during assigned activities.
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Some evening, weekend and multi-day work and travel within Alaska may be required, including small aircraft travel to remote communities and accompaniment of students on approved activities.
EVALUATION
Annual written evaluation based on district expectations, position responsibilities and progress toward RHTP/PATH program outcomes.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, speaking, listening and computer use; occasional lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds. Requires sound judgment, confidentiality, organization and calm responses to student needs and changing schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified applicants.

Welcome to the Yukon-Koyukuk School District (YKSD). District boundaries fall within the Yukon-Koyukuk Census area. The YK Census area makes up only 1 percent (approximately 6,150 residents) of the state’s total population. The District’s ten village schools are located along the Yukon, Koyukuk and Tanana river systems, a geographic area larger than the state of Washington (encompassing about 65,000 square miles of territory). More than 98% of the district’s 315 river school students are Alaska Native (Athabascan). The district also sponsors a statewide correspondence program called Raven Homeschool. There are approximately 1,500 students enrolled in Raven during the 2015-2016 school year. District-wide, YKSD serves over 1,400 full-time students. Travel to eight of our ten communities is by small aircraft. Only one community (Minto) is accessible by a remote road system. Local travel within the communities is by boats during the summer months; and snow machine or dog sleds in the winter.
