SERRC – Alaska’s Educational Resource Center is seeking part-time Adult Education Rural Community Tutors to support adult learners working toward their educational and career goals.
The Rural Community Tutor provides individualized and small-group instruction to adults in their local community. Tutors help students build skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, prepare for the GED® test, develop English language skills, and explore career and training pathways.
Tutors work closely with students to develop individualized study plans and provide flexible, supportive instruction that meets learners where they are. Instruction takes place in person within the local community, typically in public spaces such as schools, libraries, or community centers.
This position is supervised by the Adult Education Program Coordinator and is focused primarily on direct instruction with students.
Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field preferred
Ability to work with adult learners from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
Experience supporting literacy development and individualized learning
Ability to recognize learning needs, identify appropriate resources, and provide instruction in math, reading, writing, science, social studies, citizenship, and basic computer skills
Familiarity with GED® preparation and citizenship pathways preferred
Ability to encourage and reinforce positive learning attitudes
Knowledge of career readiness skills and career planning resources
Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with program staff
Conduct student orientation, including enrolling students, helping administer TABE assessments, developing individual study plans, and tracking student progress
Provide instruction in adult education topics including math, reading, writing, science, social studies, test-taking strategies, GED® preparation, English language learning, citizenship pathways, basic computer skills, and college and career readiness skills
Adapt instruction to meet student needs and learning styles
Maintain accurate and confidential student records
Utilize approved curriculum and instructional resources
Refer students to employment and training programs and community partner agencies
Maintain a safe, supportive, student-focused learning environment in community learning spaces
Provide flexible scheduling to support adult learners
Training and support will be provided. TABE testing may be administered remotely by Adult Education instructors, with local tutors assisting with proctoring.
Tutors are needed in rural and remote communities across Alaska, depending on student need.
Priority regions currently include:
• Southeast Alaska
• Bristol Bay
• Aleutian and Pribilof Islands
• North Slope (Utqiaġvik)
• Bethel and communities throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta
Tutors must live in the community where instruction will occur and be available to provide in-person tutoring in public community spaces such as schools, libraries, or community centers. Tutoring does not occur in private homes.

SERRC - Alaska's Educational Resource Center - SERRC delivers high-quality educational services and personalized resources to meet the diverse needs of all Alaskans. SERRC provides support to districts across the state, allowing staff to focus more time and resources on instruction.
