Position: Site Maintenance/Custodian Technician
Location: Angoon School, Chatham School District – Angoon, Alaska
Position Type: Full-Time, 12 Months
Reports To: Principal/Superintendent or Designee
Position Overview
Chatham School District is seeking a dependable, self-motivated Site Maintenance/Custodial Technician to maintain the Angoon School campus and district-owned facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that school buildings, grounds, and equipment are safe, clean, functional, and well maintained. This position requires the ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and respond to maintenance needs in a rural Alaska community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform routine maintenance and repairs to school buildings, housing units, and district facilities.
Complete preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, heating, and mechanical systems.
Maintain boilers, generators, water systems, and other building infrastructure as trained and assigned.
Conduct routine inspections to identify safety hazards or maintenance needs.
Perform carpentry, painting, drywall repair, flooring repair, and minor construction projects.
Operate and maintain tools, equipment, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and district vehicles.
Maintain school grounds, sidewalks, parking areas, and outdoor facilities.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs.
Assist with setting up and tearing down facilities for school and community events.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and inventory.
Order supplies and coordinate with vendors as needed.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, state, and district safety regulations.
Assist with emergency preparedness and facility security.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Experience in general building maintenance, construction, or a related trade.
Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and mechanical systems.
Ability to troubleshoot equipment and perform repairs independently.
Experience operating maintenance equipment and power tools.
Valid Alaska driver's license (or ability to obtain one).
Ability to obtain required background clearance.

Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks.
Ability to read manuals, blueprints, and maintenance instructions.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Basic computer skills for work orders, inventory, and email.

Physical Requirements
Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders, work on roofs, crawl into confined spaces, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and walk for extended periods.
Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and vehicles.

In Southeast Alaska, The Chatham School District serves an area of approximately 43,000 square miles stretching from Angoon, on Admiralty Island in the South, to Klukwan, beyond Haines, in the North.
The district is composed of four schools in separate communities. Angoon lies on Admiralty Island. Tenakee Springs is on Chichagof Island. Gustavus lies on the mainland near the entrance to Glacier Bay. The village of Klukwan lies 22 miles North of Haines. The communities are accessible by state ferry and/or plane. The schools vary in enrollment from a dozen in Tenakee to about 75 in Angoon.
The overall operation of the Chatham District is under the leadership of an elected board. The board members can be contacted by mail through the district office at Post Office Box 109, Angoon, Alaska 99820.
The board believes that input from the site level can improve school performance. There is an Advisory School Board representing each site. Chatham’s District-wide Superintendent, David Langford, in conjunction with board members and all school staff, implements school policies.
