Gilson Middle School � Assistant Cheer Coach Job Description

Due to the large number of students participating in the cheer program, Valdez City Schools is seeking an additional Assistant Cheer Coach to provide additional supervision, instruction, and support. The cheer season runs from September 17 through November 21, 2026. The selected candidate will begin as soon as possible following hire and completion of required onboarding and will remain in the position through November 21, 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Demonstrates the ability to assist in organizing and supporting a cheerleading program that promotes skill development, teamwork, school spirit, and sportsmanship.
2. Previous experience in cheerleading (as a coach or participant) is preferred.
3. Possesses knowledge of cheer techniques, safety guidelines, and the physical and emotional development of middle school students.
4. Serves as a positive role model for student-athletes through appropriate behavior, leadership, and mentorship.

REPORTS TO:

Head Cheer Coach, Athletic Director, and Gilson Middle School Principal

JOB GOAL:

To support the Head Cheer Coach in providing instruction in cheer fundamentals, physical conditioning, and team-building skills necessary for individual and team success. The Assistant Coach should help foster a positive environment that promotes character development, confidence, school pride, and personal growth in student-athletes.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

1. Recognizes that middle school athletics are an extension of the educational program, with emphasis on participation, learning, and fun.
2. Maintains a supportive and respectful relationship with students, parents, staff, and the community.
3. Assists with maintaining a safe, inclusive, and structured practice environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Support and Collaboration:

1. Assists the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices, performances, and events.
2. Supports the teaching of cheerleading fundamentals, including motions, jumps, chants, stunts (as age-appropriate), and safety.
3. Encourages positive team dynamics and reinforces expectations for respectful and responsible behavior.
4. Helps supervise students during practices, games, travel, and other team events.
5. Promotes academic success by encouraging student-athletes to maintain good grades and school behavior.

Safety and Equipment:

1. Helps ensure all cheer activities comply with school and district safety regulations.
2. Assists with managing, storing, and maintaining cheer equipment and uniforms.
3. Monitors the safety and cleanliness of practice and performance areas.

Communication and Conduct:

1. Maintains open and respectful communication with students, parents, and school staff.
2. Reports concerns or incidents to the Head Coach or appropriate school personnel.
3. Models sportsmanship, inclusion, and respect at all times.

Professional Development:

1. Participates in meetings, training, or workshops as directed by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
2. Keeps up to date with basic cheerleading techniques, trends, and safety practices.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK 

Paid activity per VAFT-VCS negotiated agreement Article 11, under Extra-Curricular Activities. 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists with preparing the team for assemblies, pep rallies, and community events.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.
