Job Title: Special Education Teacher
Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher is a dedicated advocate and educator responsible for designing and delivering high-quality, individualized instruction to students with diverse learning needs. This role serves as a vital bridge between assessment and achievement, ensuring that every student—regardless of their academic level or behavioral challenges—has the tools to succeed. Working within a collaborative school model, you will lead the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), provide expert intervention, and act as a primary resource for general education staff to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. This position will serve two school campuses, Shaktoolik and Diomede, with Shaktoolik designated as the primary work location. The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for providing support to students and staff at both campuses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Valid State Teaching Certificate with a clear endorsement in Special Education.
- Proven experience in drafting, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to assess academic progress using various diagnostic tools and data-driven methods.
- Experience working with a broad spectrum of student profiles, including those with limited academic achievement, accelerated learning needs (Twice-Exceptional), and complex behavioral concerns.

Essential Functions
- Design and deliver specialized instruction that aligns with student IEP goals while maintaining high expectations for academic growth.
- Oversee the referral process, facilitate diagnostic testing, and lead the identification of students requiring specialized services.
- Write comprehensive, legally compliant Individualized Education Programs that address the specific academic, social, and behavioral needs of each student.
- Maintain meticulous, up-to-date student records, including progress monitoring, attendance, and behavioral data.
- Participate as a core member of the Child Study Team and multidisciplinary meetings to evaluate student placement and progress.
- Act as a specialized resource teacher for village school staff, providing guidance on accommodations, modifications, and classroom management strategies.
- Assist general education teachers with the successful classroom integration of students and the effective implementation of IEP-mandated supports.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the school community.

SALARY: Placement on BSSD Teacher Pay Scale
