Location: Hydaburg School, Hydaburg, Alaska
Position Summary
The Middle School Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and fostering the academic, social, emotional, and developmental growth of students in grades 6–8. The teacher creates a safe, engaging, and culturally responsive learning environment that encourages curiosity, responsibility, and respect. Due to the unique nature of a rural school district, the successful candidate must be flexible and capable of teaching multiple content areas while building strong relationships with students, families, and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Alaska State Standards.
- Teach middle school courses as assigned, which may include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, and elective subjects.
- Develop engaging lessons that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the academic, behavioral, and developmental needs of diverse learners.
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instructional decisions.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student achievement.
- Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and high expectations.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that support student success.
- Integrate technology into instruction to enhance learning opportunities.
- Collaborate with special education staff, interventionists, counselors, and colleagues to support student needs.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and successes.
- Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), staff meetings, professional development activities, and school improvement initiatives.
- Supervise students during assigned duties, field trips, and extracurricular activities as needed.
- Promote attendance, student engagement, and positive school culture.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Valid Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain Alaska certification.
- Middle-level endorsement preferred.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; master's degree preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and effective middle school instructional practices.
- Experience teaching multiple subject areas is preferred.
- Experience working in rural schools or culturally diverse communities is preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Alaska academic standards and assessment practices.
- Understanding of middle school philosophy and the developmental needs of adolescents.
- Ability to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences.
- Skill in analyzing student data to improve instruction.
- Ability to implement effective classroom management techniques.
- Understanding of culturally responsive instructional practices and Indigenous perspectives.
- Commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective practice.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to supervise students in indoor and outdoor learning environments.
Terms of Employment
- Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated teacher agreement and district salary schedule.
- Work year and duty days as established by the Hydaburg City School District.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and compliance with district hiring requirements.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with district policies, established teaching standards, and administrative procedures.
